Woven Embellishments

Three-day workshop

Description for Publicity:

You have already designed a beautiful cloth. What one design element can you add that will make it sensational? Learn how to use lines and dots of color, supplementary warps, and features of weave structures to take woven cloth to a higher level.

Day One:

The warping process, begun before the workshop, will be completed. Sample weaving will begin when warping is completed.

Day Two:

I. Lecture: color and value contrast, placement of additional design elements
II. Worksheet: where to add design elements
III. Sample weaving

Day Three:

I. Lecture: manipulating features of weave structures, using supplementary warps
II. Exercise: identifying opportunities for added design elements in previously woven cloth
III. Sample weaving
IV. Sample critiques

Level of weaving expertise: Intermediate to advanced; no prior art background required.

Maximum number of students: 18

Students need: 8-shaft loom; 10, 12, or 15 dent reed; some drafts require two sets of lease sticks; two warp apron rods, two C-clamps, and weights for second warp; shuttles; bobbin winder; appropriate yarns for assigned sample; colored pencils; graph paper; $10 materials fee.

Room requirements: A well-lit room large enough to accommodate students' looms; a seating area and tables so students can take notes during lectures.

To be provided for the teacher: Two large tables, chalk board and chalk, or white board and markers.

Teacher provides: Assigned drafts based on students' answers to a pre-workshop questionnaire, workshop drafts and handouts, examples
